FAQs
Why does a watch need regular servicing?
Like every machine that runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, a watch needs maintenance. We recommend an annual test for waterproofness at a recognized service centre, preferably before you go on a vacation. The crown can get damaged by hits and the little rubber gaskets that guarantee the tightness of the watch dry up over time, letting dust and humidity enter the movement. Also, the small amount of oil needed to lubricate the bearings of the movement gets used up.This can lead to reduced accuracy or even to stop a movement. A total overhaul of a movement is called for approx. every 6 years.
Is waterproof forever?
The waterproofness of a watch is ensured by various small rubber gaskets. These age and need to be replaced from time to time. Hits on the crown can reduce the tightness of the watch as well. Therefore, waterproof is not forever! We recommend annual testing at a recognized service centre, preferably before you go on vacation.
What is covered in a complete service/overhaul of a watch?
A complete service/overhaul of a watch consists of the following:
total rebuild of a movement including all necessary parts
lubricate all moving parts
cleansing of case and bracelet
re-establish waterproofness in water resistance watches
new gaskets in water resistant watches
new battery (quartz watches)
final inspection and setting of the watch
Availability of spare parts
Spare parts are usually avaiable for at least 15 years after the end of production of a particular model.
How hard are the Rado materials?
The case and bracelet of most Rado watches are manufactured from materials that reach a hardness of 8.5 or more on the Mohs scale (Diamond = 10). This results in scratchproofness. However, scratchproof does not mean indestructible. Therefore, heavy hits or dropping the watch need to be avoided at all cost. When dropped on a hard surface a case or a bracelet can break.
How hard is a Sapphire Crystal?
Sapphire crystal is extremely hard can almost not be scratched. It can only be damaged by hits, when the watch is dropped or by contact with materials that are even harder, like diamond, corund (marble), metal alloys, metal carbides, quartz or similar. Remember that grinding stones, sand paper, nail files and similar utensils quite ofter contain these very materials.
How long should a battery last?
Approximately 2 years, depending on the condition of the movement.
Do I have to go to an official service centre to get a battery changed?
We definitely recommend a recognized service centre as only they have the proper tools and can perform all the necessary tests.
